Four more deaths are now added to the death toll at the U.S. 50 Bypass at SR 257 intersection following a Tuesday afternoon accident.

Indiana State Police released the names of the deceased this morning. They are: driver Donald Leib, 82, of Lawrenceville, Ill.; front passenger, Evelyn Kay Grimes, 58 of Vincennes; right rear passenger, Tracy L. Grimes, 38 of Vincennes and left rear passenger, Ethel J. Leib, 80, of Lawrenceville, Ill.

Donald and Ethel are the parents of Evelyn and the grandparents of Tracy.

According to an press release from the state police, at 4:02 p.m., the white 1999 Ford Crown Victoria, driven by Leib, was traveling north on SR 257 pulled into the path of a 2005 Kenworth semi owned by Triple J Transport. The semi was westbound on the U.S. 50 Bypass. It is not known why the car pulled into the path of the semi.

The three women were pronounced dead at the scene by Daviess County Coroner Stephen Cullen. Donald Leib was taken to Daviess Community Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver of the semi, Charles Osborne, 40, Shoals, was treated and released from Daviess Community Hospital.

The intersection is slated to have stop signals put in following traffic deaths at the intersection in past years. In July, there were no bidders for the state Department of Transportation contract, but an award for the contract was given in August to Hummel Electric Inc. of Evansville for $207,255.

According to the bid letting from INDOT, the signals were to be finished on Nov. 15 of this year if someone had bid for the contract in July.

Cher Goodwin, public information director of INDOT’s Vincennes District, said because no one bid in July, the completion date was moved to May 31 due to winter weather.

“The contractor said they might be able to get there when the weather breaks in February,” Goodwin said. “More likely, it will be March when work will begin.”

Assisting at the accident scene were the Daviess County Sheriff’s Department, Washington Fire and Police Department, Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, Southwest Medical EMS, the Daviess County Coroner’s Office and Craney’s Body Shop.
