UPDATED! Trooper shot near U.S. 50; suspect dead

MONTGOMERY — An Indiana State Trooper was injured following a shooting on U.S. 50 Monday and the suspect, James D. Jones, 60 of Shoals, died in the gunfight.

State Trooper Jarrod Lents was injured while on the scene at Black Oak Armaments, 4739 U.S. 50, between Washington and Montgomery around 1:45 p.m. Lents was taken to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville for non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released, and is under the care of his family.

According to confirmed reports from state police, Lents was responding to an armed robbery at the gun store where gunfire was exchanged between Lents and the suspect. The suspect died as a result of Lents' gunfire.

Nearly two dozen members of law enforcement were on the scene and had blocked off U.S. 50.

Residents and business owners in the area said they heard about a half dozen rounds fire when police arrived on the scene but had not noticed anything out of the unusual happening in the area before.

A group of neighbors living across the street from the business said they saw law enforcement officers make their way to the backyard area between the residence of Keith Loughmiller and his business Black Oak Armaments and begin firing additional shots.

Gov. Mike Pence released a statement on the shooting.

“I am relieved to learn that Trooper Jarrod Lents’ injuries are not life-threatening. Our prayers go out to him, and I am reminded of the risks those who wear the uniform take every day, and of their courageous service to the people of Indiana.”

The Indiana State Police, in a press release, said it "does not take the loss of life lightly."

"It is the regrettable the actions of Mr. Jones resulted in his death. The Indiana State Police offers condolences to the extended Jones family for their loss."

The ISP also expressed thanks and gratitude for the public's expressions of well wishes for the speedy recovery of Trooper Lents.

Traffic in the area was being re-routed during the investigation, but U.S. 50E but was opened a few hours later to thru traffic.
