Serial burglar arrested in Washington

Case still under investigation

WASHINGTON — A Washington man was arrested Friday in a series of burglaries, but the case is still under investigation.

Washington Police officers arrested Adam Nicholas Sponn, 26, after receiving a call at 2:11 p.m. from a man who reported catching an unidentified male in his brother’s garage at 203 Hillside Dr. He ran the subject off, but was able to obtain license plate information, which returned to Sponn’s gold Chevrolet S-10 pickup.

The pickup was located at 1301 N.E. Fourth St., according to a WPD press release, where officers observed stolen items in plain view. They asked the homeowner if they could speak to Sponn, who was detained.

When officers inventoried Sponn’s pickup, based on probable cause, they recovered a large-screen TV and jewelry stolen from multiple residences in the city and county.

The homeowner at 1301 N.E. Fourth St. gave officers permission to search the home and showed them everything Sponn had brought into it, according to the probable cause affidavit. An iPad, Nook and numerous purses taken from 309 S.E. 13th St. earlier in the day were recovered. In addition, jewelry taken from 509 Sunset Ave. and 757 E. Bean Dr. was recovered.

The victims were contacted to identify their belongings, which were photographed and released to the owners, according to the affidavit.

Sponn was arrested based on evidence collected at the scenes of the burglaries as well as possession of the stolen items, according to the press release. He was transported to the Daviess County Security Center and preliminarily charged with two counts of burglary and three counts of receiving stolen property. Bond was set at $250,000.

According to court records, when Sponn was arrested, he was out on bond from a November 2012 arrest for possession of methamphetamine.
