During the month of April, Gill Funeral Service will host its annual youth essay contest titled, “The True Meaning of Memorial Day.”
The contest, open to all Washington high school students, was established to create an educational awareness involving youth in Washington communities so that they can learn more about the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans.
Essay submissions will be received April 1 through April 30 from students enrolled in Washington area high schools as well as private, charter and home schools.
Winning essays will be announced at the May 29 Essay Contest Awards Ceremony at Daviess County Courthouse, 200 E. Walnut St. A total of three prizes will be awarded; $500 will be awarded to one high school first place winner; $300 will be awarded to one first place runner-up; and $200 will be awarded to one second place runner-up.
