Take care of your heart for Valentine's Day and beyond

In recognition of Women’s Heart Health Month, Daviess Community Hospital is hosting the 1st Annual Women’s Health Fair. The event will be held Feb. 22 from 7 a.m. to noon at Daviess Community Hospital, 1314 E Walnut St., Washington. Women ages 18-years and older will receive free health screenings including blood sugar, blood pressure, body mass index, depression/Alzheimer’s screening, bone density, pulse oximetry, carbon monoxide screening and diabetic foot screenings as well as three short informative programs relating to women’s health and wellness.

Women also have an opportunity to receive lab work including Chem 16 and a total cholesterol panel for $40 (paid at time of service). Participants are asked to fast for at least eight hours prior to the lab draw. Another feature of this event is the opportunity for women to receive a screening mammogram at a reduced rate. Women who are interested in a mammogram on this day must pre-register by calling 254-8851.

“The Women’s Health Fair is focused specifically on the women in our area who do not have access to screenings during the week,” says Angie Steiner, director of Business Development at Daviess Community Hospital. “We know it’s important for women who are busy during the week working and taking care of their family to have access to health care. We decided to introduce this new event on a Saturday in hopes that we can meet the needs of these busy women. Local vendors and health care providers will also be on hand with everything from glucose meters to shoes.”

Three short programs will be available at no charge and will be delivered by Sarah Deitz, RD (DCH registered dietitian); Dennis Atienza, DO (physician at Heartland OBGYN); and Angie Cribs, (DCH physical therapist and educator). The three programs will begin at 7:30 a.m. when Deitz presents “Healthy Eating for Women,” a presentation on how to make healthy choices at any age. At 8:30 a.m., Dennis Atienza, DO presents “Ask the Gynecologist,” an interactive presentation which allows individuals to ask questions in a group setting. At 9:30 a.m., Angie Cribs, DCH physical therapist will present, “Pelvic Floor Rehab,” a presentation that gives participants information about therapy as an alternative to surgery. The programs will conclude with another session on “Women’s Healthy Eating” with Sara Deitz at 10:30 a.m.

Those who wear RED in honor of Women’s Heart Health Month will be entered into a drawing for prizes.

This event is co-sponsored by WAMW.

For more information about the event, contact the hospital at 254-8858.
