Jones family holds reunion

Seventy-three descendants and family members of James and Rachel (Gallagher) Jones met on Aug. 10 at the Martin County Community Building at Loogootee for the 40th annual Jones reunion.

The room was decorated in a 1950s theme compliments of Ruthie Wagoner, Marcia Young, Linda Hawkins, and Dianne Butler. Ronnie McDowell gave the blessing before the noon meal.

The business meeting was called to order by Chairman Linda Hawkins. Secretary Trudy Sutton read the minutes from the 2012 reunion followed by the treasurer’s report from Dianne Butler.

Betty Butler began the memorial service with a moment of silent prayer then read a poem titled “Someone Cares.” Those remembered were Melton Steven McDowell, Harletta Mae Jones Troglio, Helen Jones Conway and Tracy Lee Chestnut.

Diana Sparks, Jones Family Cookbook chairman, announced that the cookbook was available for purchase, and that she would like to continue collecting recipes from family members to add to the cookbook in coming years.

Ernie Jones who was honored with the “Jones Nose” in 2012 selected Mike L. Jones as the 2013 recipient.

Introductions were made and special family events were announced.

Jim Jones announced two recent births in his family and that there are now five generations. Mikenna Jones, daughter of Mike E. and Kristy Jones, was chosen as the Little Miss Summerfest Queen during the 2013 Loogootee Summerfest.

The Gough and Vargo families were recognized as all being dressed appropriately for the 1950’s theme.

Barbara Magendanz again did a great job with attendance prizes which were won by Jackson Jones, Jack Callahan, Jerry Loomis, Drusilla Chestnut, Ruthie Waggoner, Janice Johnson, Pat McDowell, Sherrie Jordan Troxell and Christopher Jones.

Election of officers for the 2014 reunion was held with the following being elected: Chairman Linda Hawkins, Secretary Trudy Sutton, Treasurer Dianne Butler, Memorial Service Betty Butler, Prizes Barbara Magendanz, Silent Auction Maryrose Risner, Decorations Ruthie Wagoner and Marcia Young, Cookbook Diana Sparks.
