INDOT announces road closing

Due to issues with utilities, equipment and weather, the Indiana Department of Transportation is announcing that SR 61 in Monroe City will now close on June 23.

Contractor’s crews will be closing SR 61 from the junction of SR 241 in Monroe City to the junction of SR 57 in Petersburg. No through vehicle traffic will be allowed, however local residents will have access to the point of closure. The official detour will follow SR 241, US 50 and SR 57.

SR 61 must be allowed to close for the installation of an extension storm water drainage system through the town. The first area to be closed will be the “Five Points” intersection near the Blue Jean Center. It is anticipated that this first phase of installation will last through June 28. At that time crews will move to the next phase of construction beginning immediately north of the Five Points intersection to Ninth Street. The third phase will be from just north of Ninth Street to Sixth Street. The final phase of construction begins immediately north of Sixth Street to the SR 241 intersection. There is a possibility SR 61 could re-open to through traffic the end of 2014, however the roadway would then be re-closed in the spring of 2015 to complete storm drainage installation.
