Area students receive Psi Iota Xi scholarships

Psi Iota Xi is a national philanthropic organization that helps those in need, specifically in the fields of speech and hearing, art, literature and music. The Alpha Psi Chapter Washington has been established in the community for 85 years. Through its many fundraisers the group was able to give out two yearly scholarships, one for speech and hearing and another for music.

The music scholarship is named after Past Grand President Millie Sellman and Past National President Barbara Perkins.

The recipient for the Millie Sellman/Barbara Perkins Music Scholarship was Sierra Toler. Sierra graduated from Washington High School in 2013 and is the daughter of Christina Chestnut. Sierra will be attending the University of Indianapolis and majoring in music.

The recipient for the Psi Iota Xi Speech and Hearing Scholarship was Elizabeth Brochin, a Washington Catholic graduate in 2013 and daughter of Mark and Pat Brochin. Elizabeth will be attending Indiana State University and majoring in speech-language pathology.

These scholarships are available to any graduating senior of Washington High School, Washington Catholic High School, North Daviess High School and Barr-Reeve High School who are pursuing a career in speech and hearing or music. Applications are given to guidance counselor offices at all area high schools in the spring. A committee reviews the applications with four areas being considered: grades, financial need, application/references and interview.

The interviews are conducted after the applications have been reviewed.
