Martin County releases Labor day 'Drive Sober' results

Sergeant Keith Keller of the Martin Co. Sheriff’s Department announced that Indiana’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown on impaired driving and motorcycle riding was a success.

Sergeant Keller reported that no drunk driving arrests were made. However, there was one other significant arrest. There were 16 citations and 42 warnings issued in Martin Co. during the enforcement effort, which ran from Aug. 16 to Sept. 2.

“I want to thank all of our Deputies for their hard work and dedication to making our roadways safer this Labor Day,” said Keller.

During the 2012 Labor Day holiday period (Aug. 31 to Sept. 4) there were 115 alcohol-related crashes in Indiana. During last year’s Labor Day crackdown, there were 14,655 citations issued, 669 misdemeanor DUI’s and 106 felony DUI’s.

Among motorcyclist, in 2012, in Indiana, there were 209 collisions involving alcohol impaired motorcycle and moped operators, 32 alcohol impaired motorcycle operator fatalities, and 144 alcohol impaired motorcycle operator non-fatal injuries.

“Labor Day should be a time of celebration and national reflection - not a time where officer have to notify families that they have lost a loved one due to alcohol related collisons,” said Keller.

The Martin Co. Sheriff’s Department joined forces with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and nearly 10,000 law enforcement agencies across the country during the campaign.
