LEGAL NOTICE OF PLANNED IMPROVEMENT
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is developing plans for the proposed replacement of the small structure over a tributary to Prairie Creek on State Road (SR) 57 and the improvements to the SR 57 and County Road 500 North (CR 500N) intersection. The project is located about 5.54 miles north of Old US 50 in Daviess County. The total project length is about 0.11 mile.
The SR 57 roadway grade level will be raised about 0.4 feet maximum south of the structure. The roadway through the structure will provide two 12-foot travel lanes with 6-foot shoulders. The existing culvert will be replaced with a precast concrete culvert with a 36-foot clear roadway width. The new culvert will be located about 15 feet north of the existing culvert. The CR 500N approaches will be reconstructed to standard public road approaches. Guardrail will be used over the culvert and along both the northeast and northwest quadrants of the intersection. Approximately 290 feet of the channel will require relocation due to the wider shoulders and the new approaches.
Construction of the project will require approximately 0.9 acre of new permanent right-of-way. No displacement of residents or businesses will be involved with this project. Traffic will use a temporary runaround during the construction period. The temporary runaround will be constructed on the east side of SR 57 and will require 2.2 acres of temporary right-of-way.
Total cost of the project is estimated at $1,071,746. At present, we are planning to use both state and federal funds for construction of the project. However construction of the project is contingent upon available funding.
The Federal Highway Administration and the Indiana Department of Transportation have agreed that this project falls within the guidelines of a Categorical Exclusion Level 2 with no effect to wetlands in the project area.
Preliminary design plans, along with the environmental document and other information, are being made available for review in the following offices.

All interested persons may request a public hearing or express their concerns by submitting comments to the attention of Rebecca Pyland, Program Coordinator at INDOT, Room N955, 100 North Senate Avenue, Indiana-polis, Indiana 46204-2219 on or before Monday, August 11, 2008.
If a hearing is to be in the best interest of the public, a notice will be advertised with the date, time, and place. Other-wise, any comments or materials received for the record will be considered in the decision-making process.
This notice is published in accordance with Title 23, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 771.111(h) entitled “Early Coordination, Public Involvement and Project Development”, and the Indiana Public Involve-ment/Public Hearing Pro-cedures for Federal-Aid Project Development approved by the Federal Highway Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation on July 8, 1997.
