PETERSBURG — Thursday afternoon, a Pike County Grand Jury indicted former Petersburg Police Chief Joe Hill, 38, and his girlfriend, Andrea R. Hoffman, 33, both of 107 Walnut St., Petersburg. Hill was indicted on two counts of official misconduct and one count of obstruction of justice, both Class D felonies. Hoffman was indicted for burglary, a Class B felony and 10 counts of unlawful acts, all Class D felonies.

Hoffman was arrested Thursday afternoon after she turned herself in at the Pike County Jail. She is currently being held on a $25,000 cash bond. Hill was arrested 11:30 a.m. Friday after he turned himself in at the Pike County Jail. He was released after posting a $7,500 cash bond.

The indictments stem from a state police investigation. Detective Vinnie Gieselman initiated a criminal investigation in February after receiving information that Hill was allowing his girlfriend to utilize the police department’s computer to illegally obtain prescription pain medication online. During the investigation, Detective Gieselman revealed that during 2007 and 2008 Hill had allegedly given his girlfriend the access code to the police department and a key to his office where she used the department computer to illegally order the prescriptions. Hoffman allegedly obtained Tramadol, a prescription drug to control pain, by using false names when ordering online.

Further investigation revealed that in July 2008, Hill allegedly confiscated valium from a female he had arrested. Instead of submitting the drug into evidence, Hill allegedly stored the drug under the driver’s seat of his patrol car. The valium was located in February while officers were cleaning Hill’s patrol car after he resigned as police chief on February 16. The investigation also revealed Hill provided information that he was unaware that Hoffman was illegally obtaining prescriptions through the internet.

On Labor Day 2008, Hoffman allegedly entered another person’s residence on Poplar Street in Petersburg with the intent to commit theft of Lortab, which is a prescription drug used to control pain. In January 2009, she allegedly obtained Tradadol by lying to a Petersburg physician regarding back pain.
