Haunted High is back

By Nate Smith, Staff Writer

Haunted High is back.

The annual fundraiser, or as some say “hair-raiser,” from Washington Catholic schools is set to begin tonight at the old Jefferson school on CR 150S.

While this may be the last year for the annual haunted house at Jefferson, what waits inside is a mystery only known to a few — judging from the comments of those that are planning the annual event.

J.R. Crew, known to many as a Daviess County sheriff’s deputy, is apparently also a world class inventor and ghost-hunter. His invention of the Geometric Heightened Olmes Spirit Tachometer Detector, or G.H.O.S.T, has helped him complete his study of the Haunted High.

Jefferson, a site of local ghost stories and legends, is “the nation’s hotbed of creepy, ghostly activity,” Crew said.

With all the creepiness going on at Jefferson, brave students and parents of the Washington Catholic community will be taking only “the bravest in the area” on tours, until November.

The reason for the deadline, Crew said, was “due to the many spirits wandering the halls of the building and the recommendations to seal the building doors forever.”

According to organizers, ghost hunters and psychic mediums have descended on Haunted High to study the large amounts of paranormal activity. One ghost hunter, Dr. Doug Campton, said a horror movie could be filmed at the school with the details they have learned.

“This place makes the scariest movie out now look like a child’s cartoon,” Campton said.

New oddities have been added this year to an already impressive list of spine-tingling spirits.

At city events during the past month, there has been a strange hearse in parades like the Washington Homecoming Parade and the 20th Century Carfest, with ghost lovers marching alongside in a strange ritual. Or, it could be just promotion, you’ll have to visit Haunted High to find out.

For the brave, Haunted High begins tonight from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. for those age 6 and older. A lights-on walkthrough for the younger set or those who just want the light on will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday’s hours are 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. It continues every Friday and Saturday until Nov. 1. Tickets are $2 for the walkthrough and $10 when the lights are off.

On Saturday, dinners from Fazoli’s will be available from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Washington Conservation Club, across from the Haunted High. Tickets are $6.50.

This is possibly the last chance for the “adrenaline-rushing, heart-pumping tour as the old school may soon become a shopping mall.
