---- — James Edward Wampler, 78, of Washington, died at 10:20 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Manor.

He was born Feb. 16, 1935, in Terre Haute, to the late Buel T. and Odessa (Hughes) Wampler. He married Linda Lucille Grannan July 17, 1960.

He graduated from Gerstmeyer High School in 1953. He attended Indiana State University.

He served three years in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957, during which time he attained the rank of sergeant.

He completed Indiana State Police Academy in 1958 and was assigned to the Jasper district. He received his first promotion to sergeant in 1968 and retired as first sergeant (district commander) in 1978. Upon retirement he assumed the role of vice president of K and K Industries until 1981. At that time he moved on to Basiloid Products Corp. as vice president.

In March of 1992 he and his wife Linda purchased the company. They continued ownership until their retirement in May of 2000.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, serving as Sunday school teacher of the high school class and other adult classes. He served as chairman of the board of finance, board of Christian education and the board of trustees.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Lucille Wampler; one son, Duston Jay (Lisa) Wampler; one daughter, Shannon Dee (Rod) Fahey; one granddaughter, Kelly Michelle Bowman; one stepgrandson, Brandon Mandel; stepgranddaughter, Ashley (Jeff) Sams; a brother, Thomas Anson (Martha) Wampler of Terre Haute; and a sister-in-law, Donna (Mike) McKeown of Florida.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Betty Walsh and Margaret VonTress; and two brothers, Joseph and Rowland Wampler.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Gill Funeral Home, with Rev. Timothy Baxter officiating. Burial will be in Sugarland Memory Gardens.

Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with ISP Jasper Level III Honor Guard.
