Cardinals fall to Lakers in season opener

---- — The Washington Catholic girls basketball team got off to a slow start Tuesday evening and just couldn’t catch up.

The Cardinals (0-1) lost their home opener 57-42 to Shakamak at the Bird Cage.

Washington Catholic played close with Shakamak in the first quarter, as the Lakers held a slim 10-8 advantage after one quarter. In the second quarter, however, the Lakers put some distance between themselves and the Cardinals. Shakamak outscored WC 12-5 in the quarter and took a 22-13 lead into halftime. The Cardinals held Shakamak to just 36 percent shooting (9-25), but had trouble finding the basket themselves. The Cardinals made just 4-of-16 shots from the field in the first half.

In the second half, the Cardinals played nearly even with the Lakers, but just couldn’t break throught. Shakamak outscored WC 14-12 in the third quarter and 21-17 in the fourth quarter to take the game 57-42. For the game, the Cardinals shot 22.6 percent (12-53) and 75 percent (12-16) from the free throw line. WC was led by senior Elizabeth Perkins who had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Mary Anne Wichman was the only other Cardinal in double figures with 15 points, three assists and two steals on 5-for-12 shooting.

Annie Buckley added six points and one rebound, while Sydney Dunbar and Kendra Taylor scored two points apiece. The loss was the seventh straight to Shakamak for Washington Catholic, who will host North Daviess tonight in the Bird Cage at 7 p.m.
