---- — MONTGOMERY — Families of students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Barr-Reeve may notice there’s not been much loose change around their homes lately.

For the last three weeks, students students at both the primary and elementary building have been collected money to add to a matching grant for new playground equipment at the elementary school.

School Nurse Mandy Ash applied for the matching grant through Gametime earlier this year. “We are working with Sinclair Recreation to get the equipment ordered and set up,” said Ash.

The school will be receiving two new pieces of equipment that will replace some wooden equipment that is 25 years old.

“This grant provides us a wonderful opportunity to update our playground,” said Ash.

“I think our weekly totals show how excited the kids are about the new playground. And the kindergarten classes will be the first to play on the new equipment since they raised the most.”

The school is still accepting donations to help with the $35,000 matching grant and has plans to have a permanent dedication and sponsorship wall showing all those who donated $100 or more to the playground fund.

The students have contributed over $8,500 to the matching grant through the “Pennies for the Playground” campaign.

“We have received sponsorship from both previous and future Barr-Reeve students and families, community members, businesses, and those dedicating in memory of a loved one,” said Ash.

“We are thankful for our supportive families and communities members,” said Elementary Principal Dena Lengacher, who took a pie to the face as part of the students’ “reward” for raising so much money. “Mandy Ash and Cheryl Graber have worked very hard to help make the dream of a new playground become a reality.”
