This years’ Relay for Life event began with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. Friday with about 300 participants, survivors and care givers on hand. A survivor lap and care giver celebration followed the ceremonies. Nearly 200 luminarias, in honor, memory or support of those touched by cancer were lit after dark.
Also part of the festivities was the Miss Relay contest which selects one male from a Relay for Life Team that best represents the meaning of Relay for Life.
Matt Fisher, or “Mattie”, a member of the KFC team said he participated in the Miss Relay contest for his mom who passed away in November from lung cancer.
“I’m doing all of this for her, for my mom,” said Fisher.
The event will conclude with the closing ceremonies beginning at 10 a.m. today.
