Local artist Cory Brown had a dream. He wanted to bring the excitement from conventions he and many other independent artists, authors and film makers attend across the Midwest to a local venue.
And because of that dream, the first Halloween Arts Harvest — a gathering of arts and horror, was born. The event will take place Saturday at the Washington Holiday Inn from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Admission is $2 with children under 12 free.
“I just thought this would be a great way to show what some of our local and regional people can do,” said Brown. “We have a lot of talented people but often no one sees what they do unless they travel to a bigger city.” Brown said his event, which will feature work by himself, Jeff Gaither, author J. Travis Grundon, Dick Starr and Ben Harley, is for anyone who is interested in art, movies or books. “You’ll see everything ranging from rock posters to sketch cards to cartooned styled work and digital art,” said Brown. “We even have an author coming.” Artists featuring more traditional and realistic art will also be available as well as books written by Grundon and t-shirts designed by Harley.
“This is a great thing for anyone who wants a career in art to attend. They will be able to see what that kind of life can be like if you pursue the arts,” said Brown.
“I’m looking forward to the show being a smaller version of the conventions Cory and I appear at all the time,” said Grundon, who will be promoting his new book, “Mr. Bad Example” at the show. “I’ll also be promoting a short film collection I wrote a movie for.”
Grundon will have copies of both the book and the film collection available for purchase Saturday. “It’ll be a lot of fun. I hope to see a lot of people out to support indie artists, authors and filmmakers,” Grundon said.
Brown’s goal is to make the Harvest Arts Festival an annual event. “The more support we get this year will help this grow for next year,” said Brown. “This is really an event for the whole family.”
