---- — ELNORA — North Daviess schools will head into Amish country for registration this coming school year.

On Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon, school administrators will have registration at the Simon J. Graber Community Building. Superintendent Robert Bell told the North Daviess School Board on Monday this is the first time North Daviess will have a separate registration for the Amish community.

“We believe it will be more convenient,” Bell said.

North Daviess schools, along with Barr-Reeve, are the public schools of choice for many in the Amish community. Mostly, Bell said, students in the community stay until the end of eighth grade, but several are staying to high school.

The Amish session will be one of several to be held in August to get ready for the upcoming school year. Registration will start on Aug. 1 from noon to 7 p.m. in the high school gymnasium for returning students. For new students, registration is on Aug. 2 from 8 a.m. to noon at both the elementary and high schools.

New students are asked to bring their child’s birth certificate, immunization records and proof of guardianship, if needed. Children entering kindergarten should call the elementary school at 636-8000, ext. 2000 to start the registration process.

Once again this year, online registration is also available at North Daviess, starting July 25. The first day of school starts on Aug. 13 at North Daviess.

Personnel

The board approved several personnel appointments for the new school year. The board hired: Tracy Tuell to teach one science class for 1/8 of teacher salary, Stephne Beard as elementary teacher, Gary Stuckey as a summer teacher, Cathy Gingerich as instructional assistant for Jump Start, Jordan Miller as co-coach for junior high football; and Ashley Smith as junior varsity girls volleyball coach.

Annie Miller resigned as elementary extra-curricular treasurer and secretary and the board appointed Tami Allen as her replacement. The board also granted teacher Nicole Cook maternity leave.

Board policies

Several changes to board and school policies were presented Monday to reflect changes in state law. The policies include changes to post-secondary enrollment, habitual truancy, discipline and possessing firearms.

Another policy up for adoption at the next school board meeting on Aug. 12 involves transfer students. Bell told the board the school will accept transfer students at any time and there will be no limits on grade levels.

“At this time, the more the merrier with every student,” Bell said.
