ND kids to start early in summer

ELNORA — North Daviess School Board members approved a motion to offer Jump Start Summer School July 22 to August 8 for students in grades one, two and three. The program will be held Monday through Thursday from 8:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the elementary. The state will be reimbursing for the reading program for the elementary and for high school classes for credit. Transportation to Jump Start Summer School will also be provided at specific pick-up points.

In other elementary school news, the multiple choice portion of the ISTEP+ exam for grades three through six, will take place April 29 through May 10. This testing will be done on computers. Parent letters explaining when and how to access student results will be sent home with students in May.

Students in third grade recently took the IREAD3 assessment. The first round of results will be mailed this week. North Daviess had two students receive perfect scores of 650 on the assessment. Of the 81 third graders, 72 passed. Some of the students who did not pass have individual education plans and three of the students were within 10 points of passing. Those students who did not achieve the standard, have been placed in remediation and will have to take the assessment again June 12. The  students will also attend the Title I IREAD3 summer program for 12 days beginning May 28.

Stephne Beard was recommended for the Title I IREAD3 summer remediation program that will run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. each day. Her position will be paid through Title 1 funds.

Kindergarten round up was recently held and 111 students have been screened. Current school enrollment for the elementary is 668.

The Board also approved to offer a supervised agriculture education class for high school students if 15 or more students enroll. The class requires students have a minimum of 75 contact hours and is a credit class.

Students will be taking End of Course Assessments for Biology April 25 and 26, English 10 April 29 to May 2, Algebra 1 May 7 to 9 and ISTEP+ for seventh and eighth grade April 29 to May 7.

Prom will be held April 27 at West Gate Technology Park Academy. Grand March will be at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

Current enrollment at North Daviess Junior/ Senior High School is 447.
