Loogootee graduation scheduled for Friday

LOOGOOTEE — Loogootee Junior/Senior High School will hold its 2013 graduation exercises at 7 p.m. today.

Following the processional, opening remarks will be given by Morgan Walker, Student Council representative. The national anthem will then be sung by the high school chorus followed by two musical selections. Walker will then introduce the class speakers who have chosen the word “pasts” from their motto.

Salutatorian Waylon Matthews will address the graduates, followed by Rachel Walls, class secretary, Alyssa George, class treasurer, Jesse Horney, class president, and Valedictorian and Class Vice President Curtis Slaubaugh.

Superintendent Larry Weitkamp and Principal John P. Mullen will present the diplomas.

The class flower is the dahlia and they have chosen as their motto “Our lives are before us. Our pasts are behind us. But our memories are forever with us.”

Valedictorian Curtis Ryan Slaubaugh is the son of Charlotte and Myron Slaubaugh. He has been a four-year member of the Beta Club, where he is currently serving the office of secretary. He was the Beta historian/treasurer his junior year. He has also been involved in band, FACS Club, and Spanish Club for four years. He is currently the Spanish Club secretary. He has been involved in the musical, Spell Bowl, Lion Pride, Show Choir, Madrigals, and Peers. Curtis also participated on the English, Science, and Interdisciplinary Academic teams. He is also the senior class vice president.

Curtis plans to attend Purdue University to study bio-medical engineering after graduation.


Salutatorian Waylon James Matthews is the son of Jim and Janet Matthews. He has been a four-year member of the Beta Club, where he currently holds the office of president. He has also been a four-year member of the Pep Club. He has been involved in SADD. Lion Pride, Student Council, FACS Club, Peers and the Spanish Club. He was also a four-year member of the baseball, basketball and tennis teams. Waylon was selected to the Indiana Academic All-State teams in tennis and basketball.

After graduation Waylon plans to attend Indiana University to study biology.
