Republicans to vote on new trustee

WASHINGTON — Republicans from Washington Township will meet today to vote on a new township trustee.

Fifteen committee chairmen from Washington Township will vote at 8:45 a.m. today to fill the position following the death of Albert “Pete” Showalter, who died on April 13.

According to state law, the party of the deceased office holder has to hold a caucus to fill the rest of the term. The term ends in 2014.

Michelle Guy and Linda Bateman Cornelius are vying for the trustee position, according to GOP Chairperson Jan Schuler-Hicks.

Guy is the daughter of Showalter and was the chief deputy in the trustee’s office during the last years of Showalter¹s time in office.

The office of township trustee deals mainly in relief for the poor, but Showalter created a row in 2011 when he refused to sign a contract with the Carnegie Public Library for $10,000.

The library then had to charge residents in the township $42 for library cards, causing a drop in library cards for those who lived outside the city of Washington but still in the township.

Showalter again refused to sign a contract with the library in 2012, citing lower property tax revenues.

Schuler-Hicks said whoever wins the special caucus will be sworn in Monday.

This is the second year Republicans in Daviess County have to meet to fill an office due to death. Last month, precinct committee chairmen from the entire county elected Elaine Wellman as county treasurer following the death of Martin Mumaw III.
