Illinois body may be linked to missing Indiana woman

PRINCETON, Ind. —  A man who lived near a southwest Indiana woman last seen leaving a grocery store showed police where the woman's car had crashed and has been arrested, authorities said.

Sandra Burkhardt, 58, of rural Gibson County, went missing Friday night. A body was found Saturday near Crossville, Ill., and White County Sheriff Doug Maier told WEHT-TV that he believed the body would be connected to Burkhardt's disappearance. He did not provide more details.

Indiana police arrested 25-year-old Thomas Davidson on Saturday while investigating a string of burglaries in the area. Gibson County Sheriff George Ballard said Davidson led police to Burkhardt's crashed car, which was found near Petersburg, about 50 miles west of Crossville.

Davidson was transferred early Sunday from the Posey County Jail in Mount Vernon, Ind., to the White County Jail in Carmi, where a jail officer said he couldn't disclose any charges against Davidson. Online jail records did not indicate whether Davidson had an attorney. Gibson County Sheriff George Ballard told the Princeton Daily Clarion that Davidson has a hearing set for Monday in White County Circuit Court. No other details were immediately available

Burkhardt was last seen Friday night leaving a store in Princeton with a grandchild. Her daughter told Indiana authorities she found the grandchild asleep at Burkhardt's home but the woman and her car were missing. The Clarion reported Davidson is a former resident of the Crossville who more recently had been living near Burkhardt's rural home.

Davidson initially was jailed in Posey County where a warrant was issued for him earlier Saturday in connection with a shooting in Mount Vernon. A man matching Davidson's description fired two shots from inside a car matching Burkhardt's and battered an unidentified woman, Ballard said. No other details were immediately available.
