Lovers of cooking and daily devotion will have a chance to meet with Southern Illinois author Mary McSparin Friday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at A Touch of Heaven on Main Street in Washington. McSparin will be signing copies of her first book “Taste & See: A Devotional Cookbook”. The signing will coincide with the Heartbeat of Washington’s Christmas Stroll.
McSparin has always been a lover of words, writing and cooking. After returning to college to earn her bachelor’s degree, she found inspiration to write “Taste & See”.
“The process of writing papers for school inspired me to write other inspirational things,” McSparin said. “While finishing my degree, I was elected class chaplain and wrote my own devotionals for the class. I always tried to apply the devotion to the people in the class,” said McSparin who often cooked for families that were going through crisis or needed encouragement.”
Along with one of her friends, McSparin tested the idea of devotional cooking with a 12-week class.
“We all know that women need each other and how many of us use cooking as a way to help those when they are grieving or going through tough times,” said McSparin. “The class was really expanded and brought full circle by using scripture as well as cooking terms for good and easy recipes.”
The class was a huge success and women of all ages attended and were sent home with a devotional.
The cookbook, which will be available for purchase Friday at A Touch of Heaven offers recipes for appetizers, side dishes, main courses and more along with space for journal entries, a few questions to ponder and devotionals.
“Appetizers are what God created and heaven is dessert for example. The recipes are all divided into categories that represent various parts of the scripture,” said McSparin.
In addition to the recipes, there is also a tools and gadgets section that lists items needed for both cooking and spiritual growth.
“With Christmas around the corner, this makes a really great and inexpensive gift for many people,” said McSparin, who said the book is also available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Lifeway.
