Hatchets third, Cardinals 4th at Invitational

WASHINGTON — Washington placed third and Washington Catholic fourth in the four-team Washington Tennis Invitational at Lena Dunn Elementary School Saturday.

Evansville Mater Dei took team honors with 33 points followed by Evansville Central with 16. The Hatchets had 11 points. Washington Catholic failed to score.

Chelsea Brown placed second at second singles for Washington, losing the championship match to Katherine Bender of Mater Dei, 6-2, 6-1. Brown advanced by defeating Macy Kane of Washington Catholic in straight 6-1 sets.

Audrey Rogers also placed second at third singles, losing to Hillary Smith of Evansville Central, 6-1, 7-5 in the championship. Rogers advanced with a straight 6-0 decision against Rachel May of Washington Catholic.

Washington’s second doubles of Becca Guthrie-Amber Showalter also finished second, dropping straight 6-1 sets to Mater Dei. The Hatchet team defeated Central’s Haley Barker-Austy French in straight 6-4 sets to advance.

Hatchet Brittney Pierson won the consolation bracket with a 6-4, 6-1 win against Claire Burch. Burch lost in the first round to Kacis Niesliandt of Central, 6-0, 6-3.

Washington¹s first doubles team of Rachel Chattin-Kayla Mercer also won the consolation bracket with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Washington Catholic¹s Elizabeth Brochin-Megan LaGrange. The Hatchets lost in the opening round to eventual champions Emily McAtee-Jenna Smith, 6-2, 6-3.

Mater Dei won four of the five championships, with the lone exception being the win by Smith at third singles.
