Lady Cougars fall to Eastern in overtime 43-40

The Washington Times-Herald

---- — ELNORA - The North Daviess Lady Cougars dropped its SWIAC finale to Eastern Greene in overtime on Saturday, 43-40.

ND got 15 points from Meghan Knepp and 10 from Brooke Moore, but were outscored 18-6 over the final quarter and OT.

“(It was) not the result we were wanting. We have a tough stretch of conference games in January and when you are leading your conference as we have for the last two years, you get a target on you,” said ND coach Ron Knepp.

“You are the team they want to beat and you get their best game efforts. I have always thought it is much less pressure to play as the underdog rather than the favorite. This year has been a little different in the fact this team has been a favorite in a majority of their games which is a testament to what they have accomplished this year.”

The game was tied at nine after the first eight minutes, but ND went on a 10-2 run in the second. ND added four points to the margin with a 15-11 run, however an 11-2 Lady Bird fourth pushed the game into overtime.

“This was our last home game for our seniors and we will miss them tremendously. They have all played at the varsity level since they were freshman so it seems they have been around forever. I would love to take this opportunity to personally thank them and their families for the time and effort they have put into this program and for allowing me to be their coach,” added Knepp.

“Now we move into the post-season where regular season records do not matter and it is survive and advance time. As I have told our girls, the pages in these post-season chapters are empty and we can write a tremendous final few chapters. We are not ready for this book to end we are just getting to the really good part.”

Kayla Rodgers led Eastern with 11 points. Also scoring for ND was Sabra Smith with five, Taylor Mallet with four, three from Maggie Swartzentruber, while Abby Cecil and Makayla Spears combined for three.
