---- — The Washington Catholic Lady Cardinals lost a close game to the Columbus Christian Lady Knights Saturday, 50-45.

Despite great shooting from Marianne Wichman from the three-point land the Cardinals fell short in their comeback bid.

Washington Catholic (0-8) started the game out strong. Wichman hit two quick threes to open the game and WC jumped out to an early 8-3 advantage. But Columbus Christian (7-4) would not be intimidated by the hot start and went on a 15-5 run led by guard Macy Wingham, while Marianne Wichman had 12 of WC 13 points at the end of one.

The second quarter was much of the same as Wichman and Wingham seemed to be playing a game within the game to see who could hit more three pointers. Washington Catholic was able to cut the lead to 1 midway through the second but the Wingham was able to hit a three to stop the run and extended the lead to 4. Columbus Christian took a 30-22 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was dominated by Columbus Christian capitalizing on WC turnovers and taking a 44-33 advantage into the fourth.

Washington Catholic wouldn’t give up though. Two threes by Wichman cut a 12-point Columbus advantage down to 6. Columbus Christian’s Rachel Warren then answered the run with a quick layup. But Washington Catholic kept attacking and behind strong play from Wichman and Elizabeth Perkins was able to cut the lead down to five with a minute to play. Columbus Christian missed a free after a quick foul and Perkins took the ball the length of the court for a layup to cut the lead to three with 40 seconds to go. The Cardinals then fouled Wingham with 27 seconds left. Wingham hit both free throws and Columbus Christian never looked back and escaped with a 50-45 win.

After the game Lady Cardinals coach Michael Hopkins said he was proud of the way his team fought to the end.

“We were looking to push at the end of game and just learn to play ball. We are a young team and every day we are just continuing to learn the game.

The Cardinals were led by Marianne Wichman’s six three pointers and 26 points followed by Elizabeth Perkins with 17 points. Columbus Christian was led by Macy Wingham with 25 points.

The Lady Cardinals are back in action Jan. 3 against South Knox.
