Vikes win, Lions lose at B-R tourney

MONTGOMERY - Barr-Reeve survived a tough challenge from Shakamak, and White River Valley blitzed Loogootee in the second half on the way to an easy victory in the first Blue Chip/SWIAC Classic on Monday at Kavanaugh Kourt.

Shakamak (6-5) entered Monday’s contest with maybe the most size coach Mark Holt’s team will see all season long. Boasting multiple girls over six feet tall, the Lady Lakers used their size advantage for early baskets from the post, and opened a 12-7 lead after one quarter.

Barr-Reeve (8-1) seemingly righted the ship in the second quarter, and a half court trapping defense stakes the Vikings to a 20-16 halftime advantage. Shakamak’s Jerri Beck got hot in the third quarter and created a 31-31 tie, and with just under two minutes left in the ballgame, the Lakers actually led the Vikings 43-38.

From that point forward, Jenna Knepp would not be denied. The Barr-Reeve senior guard knocked down a triple, two baskets on drives to the basket, and three free throws, and the Vikings ended the game on a 10-0 run to win 48-43.

Knepp ended with a game high 22 points, and was followed by Tiara Kenney with 11, and Olivia Carroll with eight.

The second morning contest saw Loogootee (2-7) play a competitive first half against White River Valley (8-3), and the Lions trailed just 20-16 at the break. Loogootee opened the half on a mini run, and cut the Wolverine lead to one at 22-21.

From that point forward, WRV turned up the defensive intensity, and created multiple steals which were converted to easy baskets. WRV ended the game on a 35-6 run to win going away at 57-27.

Christina Ziegler and Mya Hedrick each chipped in seven points to lead the Loogootee effort.
