Hatchets defeat Mitchell

MITCHELL — The Washington girls basketball team won 14 games all of last season, but this season the Hatchets have won 15 times in four less games.

Class 3A No. 9 Washington (15-2) defeated Mitchell (6-9) 52-42 Tuesday night for its fourth straight win behind 32 points from senior Ally Hunsinger, who moved into the No. 3 spot on the Lady Hatchet all-time scoring list.

The Hatchets jumped on the Blue Jackets quickly as Hunsinger scored 21 points in the first half to give Washington a 31-12 lead at the half. Coming out of halftime, Mitchell pushed the tempo and stole the momentum Washington seized in the first half. Mitchell outscored Washington 16-6 in the third quarter to cut the Hatchet lead to 37-28.

The Hatchets bounced back in the fourth by outscoring Mitchell 15-14 to secure the 10-points victory. Audra Stallman had six points and pulled down 12 rebounds and Cheyenne Jones had five points and six rebounds to control the paint. Jenna Johnson had five points and Lupe Perez added four points.

“The girls really played with a high level of intensity that first half of play on both ends of the floor,” said Washington coach Gretchen Miles. “We could not come up with the defensive stops that we needed in the third quarter and could not find the basket very well. We lost that aggressive mentality that we had in the first half. The kids grinded out another game to find a way to be ahead at the end. Ally (Hunsinger) got herself in the offensive flow of the game early by hitting some shots around the basket and then that opened up her three-point shooting. She was really aggressive cutting to the basket and she was cutting hard with a purpose and those are the type of players that are difficult to defend when they are cutting hard and not standing around. Audra Stallman had a great game on the boards for us. She really took over and owned the boards on both ends of the floor and battled hard inside.”

In the JV game, Washington lost 30-17. McKenzie Norton and Kaitlyn Davis led Washington with five points a piece.
