Senior trio will be missed

When the girls basketball season gets underway seven months from now, there will be a noticeable difference in the overall talent level across Daviess County. The senior class of 2014 has been especially special to the area, but a trio of girls will be missed most. Two of them reached the 1,000-point plateau and another helped rebuild a scuffling program.

Ally Hunsinger (Washington), Jenna Knepp (Barr-Reeve) and Sabra Smith (North Daviess) were named to the Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Team, as Daviess and Knox County sent six girls to the East squad. Vincennes Rivet’s Lauren Herman and Bailey Dreiman and North Knox’s Maria Gugliotta also made the team, which will play against the West team April 27 at Tecumseh High School. Knepp, Dreiman, Gugliotta and Hunsinger were also named to Hoosier Basketball Magazine’s Top 60 senior girls list.

“That was a big honor to me,” Hunsinger said. “I would have never thought I would be considered for the top 60 players in the entire state, that really means something. I’ve played AAU with a lot of the girls on the HBCA team and it’s kind of like we’re coming back together. It is an honor to work with the best of the best from our area.”

Over the past four years, Hunsinger has excelled as one of, if not the best forward in the area. Washington compiled a record of 56-29 and this year, the Washington senior was able to top the 1,000-point mark. Under the direction of coach Gretcen Miles, who reached the century point mark as a player for the Hatchets in the 1990s.

“There would be times that I would be so upset about a game I had where I didn’t play well and she (Miles) would always pick me up, dust me off and tell me to keep working and she always supported me through everything. She has really been able to help me with advice from things she went through when she played.”
