WHS wins Big 8 crown for second straight year

PRINCETON — For the second year in a row, the Washington cross country team won the Big 8 conference championship Tuesday evening at Princeton. The race was moved from Saturday, where storms postponed the event until Tuesday evening.

The Hatchets finished with a team score of 41, which bested second place finisher Jasper at 47 points. Princeton came in third with 84 points, which was followed by Boonville at 87 and Mt. Vernon with 90. Vincennes and Mt. Carmel didn’t have enough runners to qualify.

Jesse Stanley from Boonville was the overall winner with a time of 16:06. Washington KC Heller finished second at 16:58 and fellow Hatchet Drew Brothers placed third with a time of 17:02. Washington’s Austin Gray finished seventh (17:30), Koty Hatton came in at 14th (18:01), Dalton Short 20th (18:38), Colton Garland 21st (18:40) and Curt Potts 25th (19:10).

On the girls side, Jasper won with an overall score of 24, followed by Vincennes Lincoln (64), Mt. Carmel (80), Mt. Vernon (90), Boonville (137), Princeton (145) and Washington (166). Tara Kassidy was the top finisher with a time of 19:09. Washington’s top finisher was Brandy White with a time of 20:54. Rebecca Guthrie finished 35th with a time of 26:16, Lauren Atienza 40th (28:22), Cara Atienza 42nd (31:53) and Sydney Riester 42nd (32:07).

Heller, Brothers and Gray won All-Conference honors by finishing in the top 10. It was the fourth straight All-Conference award for Heller, the third for Gray and second for Brothers. White was named All-Conference for the second straight year.

Washington will participate in the South Knox sectional next Tuesday.
