This week the Cougar start first of their “doubleheader” with Springs Valley. The Blackhawk will closeout the regular season on Friday at Cougar Valley, and then turn around and make the trip again as ND’s opening round sectional opponent.
Valley comes into the game at 1-7 with it’s only win coming over Mitchell in Week 2. Although coach Kevin Mills is just 1-7 this season, he has won at least five games in each of the last three years, including three straight over the Cougars.
“This is the first year Valley is back in our sectional, but it seem like it happened all the time, 10 years ago or so,” said Helms.
“They have a couple of back that are really good, and they run play-action very well. They may have taken their lumps, but they play a tough schedule. With a lot of other schedules, that record would have been a lot more like .500,” said Helms.
Helms said they aren’t planning on holding anything back for the sectional game.
“I think this Friday gives us the opportunity to experiment a little with personnel and our offense and defense,” he added.
“We will probably spread the field more. You will probably be seeing Sam Chapin at quarterback some of the time. We know if you want to advance in the tournament, you have to be able to throw the ball.”
The Cougar will kickoff in Cougar Valley at 7 p.m.
