---- — LOOGOOTEE — The North Daviess volleyball team had an up and down year, but in its sectional opener there were no problems to see.

The Cougars (11-22) defeated Washington Catholic (0-21) in three straight sets (25-11, 25-9, 25-7) to advance to Saturday’s semi-finals against Class A No. 2 Barr-Reeve, who defeated Vincennes Rivet in the second match Thursday night.

North Daviess took and early 8-5 lead before the first timeout, but the Cardinals bounced back to tie it at 10 midway through the first set.

The Cougars responded by scoring 15 of the final 16 points to take first set in convincing fashion.

North Daviess coach Rebecca Hays thought her team just came out a little tight and needed to find a rhythm.

“I think the girls were a little nervous, jittery and not quiet awake at the start,” Hays said. “I just told them to talk and move and after that they did pretty well.”

The final two sets weren’t much of a contest as the Cougars cruised past the win-less Cardinals to sweep the three sets.

Hays said her team was able to continue the momentum from the first set to overpower the Cardinals and take the victory.

“I feel like for the most part when we face adversity we have trouble — it’s a mentality,” said Washington Catholic coach Audrey Talbert. “We start out well, but we just can’t keep it going. If we have something that knocks us down it bothers us, that one girl — Taylor Jeffers (6 kills, 11 aces, 1 block, 1 assist and 4 digs) — did an it in for us. I kept telling the girls, one girl can’t finish this game.”

After finishing her first year as the WC coach has plans to start putting more of an emphasis on the volleyball program so they can avoid the two-year win-less stretch that they are currently experiencing.

The Cougars were led by Morgan Wadsworth with 5 kills, 5 aces, and 7 digs and Chandra Bruner had 4 kills, 1 ace and 7 digs. Jessica Miller added 2 kills, 3 aces and 2 blocks. Nicole Woodruff scored 2 kills and 3 assists and Madison Reed had 1 kill, 1 ace, 12 assists and 5 digs. Lenzi Brewer added 1 ace, 2 assists and 5 digs and Randi Pershing had 6 digs.

The Cougars will face Barr-Reeve (32-2) Saturday at 11 a.m. for the chance to play the Sectional 63 championship later that night.
