Barr Reeve battles but Jeeps Sweep Sectional

LOOGOOTEE — A senior laden Barr-Reeve boys tennis team battled, but in the end the Northeast Dubois Jeeps swept their way to a sectional win at Loogootee. The Jeeps didn’t lose a single set on their way to a 5-0 win over the Vikings, but Barr-Reeve made them battle. “This was the best we played all season,” said Viking coach Tim Swartzentruber.

Dubois captured the No. 1 singles with the Vikings John Cangelosi falling to Tyler Haas 6-1, 6-0.

The battle of the evening came in No. 2 singles. Barr-Reeve senior Tyler Bennett played a patient match with long volleys. After more than 2 hours of play Dubois Gage Knies won 7-5, 7-6.

“It was really a strong effort,” said Swartzentruber. “Our No. 2 doubles pushed them to a tie breaker in the second set. It was really a strong effort.”

The No. 2 doubles team of Zach Graber and Colten Lottes lost to the Jeeps’ Patrick Betz and Ethan Kieffner 6-2, 7-6.

The Vikings No. 1 singles team of Clay Cummings and Trevor Steiner fell 6-3, 6-3 to Tristen Linne and William Schepers.

Jeff Parsons was also defeated in No. 3 singles to Dubois’ Cayden Knies 6-0, 6-1.

“We just played these guys last week, and we weren’t even close then,” said Swartzentruber. “Our kids stepped up against a very strong and talented team and played their hearts out.”

The Jeeps will move on to the Jasper Regional.

The loss wraps up the season for the Vikings and their four seniors with a 14-8 record.
