Cougars run over Wood Memorial, 45-8

OAKLAND CITY – After last week’s 55-0 loss at Linton, the North Daviess football team got a chance to be on the other end of a lopsided score.

The Cougars (5-2) defeated Wood Memorial (0-7) 45-8 behind 250 yards and five touchdowns from senior tailback Colton Lengacher.

North Daviess scored on every possession in the first half. The Cougars led 12-8 after the first quarter and 33-8 at halftime. The Cougars went 51 yards on 7 plays to score a touchdown on the game’s opening drive to take a 6-0 lead.

On the Cougars’ second offensive possession, Lengacher ran for a 67-yard touchdown to give North Daviess a 12-0 lead. Wood Memorial answered with a 12-play 65-yard touchdown drive which was capped by a 1-yard Sam Trader touchdown.

North Daviess stole the momentum right back by scoring the next three touchdowns to take a 25-point lead into halftime. Lengacher’s third touchdown was a 52-yard scamper, which pushed the lead to 18-8 with 8:34 to play in the first half.

After a Wood Memorial punt, senior quarterback Brady Helms found Logan Turpin for a 43-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the drive to extend the lead to 26-8.

With just over one minute left in the first half, the Cougars had the ball at their own five-yard-line, but back-to-back 25 yard runs from Turpin and Doug Bays put the ball in Trojan territory. Lengacher caught a pass for 33 yards to put the Cougars in the red zone. Lengacher capped off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to give North Daviess the 25 point lead at the half.

“We are building and getting better as we move towards the sectional,” said North Daviess assistant coach Kent Parisien. “Tonight was a building block.”

One bright spot for the Cougars in the first half was Helms, who had 96 yards on four completions including the touchdown throw to Turpin, in the first two quarters.
