Perkins leads Barr-Reeve to 2nd place finish

---- — MONTGOMERY — Barr-Reeve finished second overall behind South Knox in the boys Blue Chip Conference cross-country meet on Saturday. Rounding out the top four in the meet was Northeast Dubois and Loogootee with Washington Catholic finishing seventh.

Barr Reeve and Washington Catholic came in fourth and sixth overall out of in the girls meet. Barr Reeve freshman Emily Schultheis came in first with a time of 20:41 and Washington Catholic junior Sydney Dunbar finished 12th with a personal best of 24:01.

Barr Reeve sophomore Jarit Perkins came in first place in the boys meet with a time of 16:03.

“I’m pretty happy with our overall performance today,” said Barr Reeve coach JayR Perkins. “I thought we responded pretty well today after a mediocre race last week, so I’m pretty happy today.”

The biggest challenge for runners was the rain, which soaked the course both the day before the race and the day of.

“A few spots had a little water laying on top,” said Perkins. “Besides that the course was ok.”

Washington Catholic runner Sam Baker, who finished seventh overall, had an additional challenge on top of the weather.

“Obviously the rain and the mud (was a challenge) but Sam had an extra challenge,” said Washington Catholic head coach Josh Wichman.

“He had to take the SATs. He left before 7 a.m. to go take the SATs, run home, and then come run the race. So, he had a full day before I even woke up.”

The teams will now focus on the upcoming sectional meet, where South Knox is the favorite to win, leaving the remaining teams to fight for the two remaining places that qualify for regional.

“Gibson Southern and Washington will be the two teams we’ll be battling for that third spot,” said Perkins. “We’ve done all we can do physically so we’re getting prepared mentally.”
