BLOOMFIELD — The North Daviess girls basketball team trailed for much of the night, but they were still able to pull out its 14th win of the season.

The Lady Cougars (14-4, 6-1 SWIAC) defeated Bloomfield (7-11, 4-4) 33-27 Tuesday to notch their fifth straight victory.

North Daviess led 7-6 after the first quarter behind six points from junior forward Sabra Smith in the opening eight minutes. In the second quarter, Bloomfield rebounded by outscoring North Daviess 10-4 to take a 16-11 lead into halftime.

North Daviess coach Ron Knepp told his team at the half that they just needed to keep the game close heading into the fourth quarter in order to have a shot to pull out a win.

The Cougars outscored the Cardinals 8-6 in the third quarter, but still trailed 22-19.

In the final quarter, the Cougars imposed their will and outscored Bloomfield 14-5 to pull away with the six-point victory.

Smith was the lone Cougar in double figures with 21 points, followed by Taylor Mallett with seven, Brooke Moore with three and Meghan Knepp with two points.

"We believe that if we can be close going into the fourth quarter, anything is possible and we proved that," Knepp said."I'm not sure how many close games we've had here in December and January, but it seems we are getting those wins this year. I think it is due to experience we have gained  from years past, and how we¹re able to keep our composure and we believe someone is going to step up when we need them." Tuesday¹s victory was the Cougars' fifth conference game in the last two weeks, four of which have come away from the Cougar Den.
