Cougars upset No. 4 Vikings, win Buggy Bowl

North Daviess head coach Ron Knepp, both fists clenched raised in the air with pure elation.

The Cougars (8-1) girls basketball team upset Class A No. 4 Barr Reeve (5-1) at Kavanaugh Kourt 39-29 to capture the 2012 Buggy Bowl behind a complete team effort.

Both teams came out sluggish, and tense as they struggled through a 10-point first quarter that had the visiting Cougars with a 6-4 lead. The Vikings came out firing in the second quarter behind junior Jenna Knepp, who scored

11 of her 19 points in the quarter as Barr-Reeve took a 17-13 lead into halftime. After a Barr-Reeve free throw extended the lead to 18-13 early in the third quarter, the Vikings appeared to have all the momentum. It was a time for a North Daviess comeback that the Cougars discovered.

"Barr-Reeve spurts, they are a team of spurts," Ron Knepp said. "We talked about that, four points, six points, you have to answer the spurt. You have to punch back. We have to realize they're in a spurt, calm ourselves down, and get a good shot. "Once North Daviess got its composure, it gained confidence with every made shot down the stretch. With the score tied at 23 through three quarters, Ron Knepp told his team the score was 0-0 again. The Cougars took control, and won the fourth quarter 16-6 for the 10-point final margin.

The North Daviess pressure defense only allowed three Vikings to score, while the Cougars offense had four or more points from five different players.

Meghan Knepp led the Cougars in scoring with 14, 10 of which came in the second half. Ron Knepp said one of the keys to the upset Thursday evening was the play of two freshman, Brooke Moore and Sarah Fitzgerald, who combined for nine points.

"She's (Moore) a freshman, she's too young to know what kind of game this is," Ron Knepp said. "She's a big body, strong kid and does whatever you tell her to do. We have Sarah Fitzgerald starting for us, and playing some major minutes too. That¹s two freshman there playing. "The win is big for the program, but Ron Knepp emphasized that it's just one game.

"This is a Barr-Reeve team that we meet them in sectional, they could paste us by 20," Barr-Reeve coach Mark Holt was unavailable for comment after the game.
