MOUNT VERNON —

Class 3A No. 14 Mount Vernon broke away from Washington early and handed the Hatchets a 57-41 loss in girls Big Eight Conference basketball Saturday.

The Wildcats (8-2 2-0 Big Eight) led 17-9 at the first quarter and 33-19 at the half. Mt. Vernon then put the game away with a 15-10 third for a 48-29 lead.

"Mt.Vernon ia a very good team with losses coming to Vincennes Rivet and Evansville Mater dei," Washington coach Gretchen Miles said. "They are very physical and pressure the basketball and passing lanes on very possession.

We did not repsond to that pressure and physicality, and that, in return, effected us on both ends of the floor."

Ally Hunsinger scored 14 points for Washington (6-4, 1-3). Hannah Mason scored nine and Audra Stallman eight.

Mount Vernon won the junior varsity game, 28-19.
