Washington got the hits, but it was Forest Park who got the runs.
Hatchet pitcher Allexis Lemon allowed a single hit in the softball season opener for both teams at the Sports Complex Tuesday, but the visiting Rangers came away with the win, 4-1.
Forest Park went hitless before Adria Giesler doubled to right field in the top of the seventh. She would eventually score the final run of the game after Forest Park scored twice in the first with the help of two Washington errors and once in the sixth with the aid of another Washington miscue.
The Hatchets were charged with five errors in the contest, but Washington coach Alan Lemon said he was encouraged following the first game with a young team behind his veteran pitcher.
"We knew with three freshmen playing it was going to take awhile," Lemon said. "We made some errors, but they were errors on good efforts. It wasn't like we were scared or didn't know what we were doing." Washington had three hits to the lone hit for the visitors, and scored its run in the sixth.
Paige Hawthorne and Lemon both singled in the inning against Forest Park pitcher Ericka Lange. Hawthorne came home from third on a sacrifice from Ashlee Hayes who reached base on the Rangers' lone error of the evening.
Lemon went to third on the play, giving Washington runners at first and second with one out, trailing 3-1.
Lauren White tried to move the runners with a line drive down the third base line that was just foul before grounding to second.
Kerstein Burks then hit a shot down the first base line that was also just foul before being retired to end the inning.
"We got the bat on the ball," Lemon said. "We didn't always do that last year. These kids are young, but they are aggressive. It's going to come." Lemon fanned 10 while walking one.
"She's well, and she's going to be just fine," Lemon said of the senior who missed part of last season due to injury.
"We made some errors behind her, but we're a young team and before the season ends, I think we're going to play some pretty good ball."
