Hatchets finish 4th at Cambridge

EVANSVILLE — Washington had yet another strong showing in tournament play with a fourth place finish in the Evansville Central Invitational played at Cambridge Golf Club. Heritage Hills, Reitz and Castle finished ahead of the Hatchets who shot a team score of 334.

“This score was the best 18-hole round we have ever played at Cambridge,” WHS coach Bill Ricke said. “The guys did a nice job playing this links style layout. Though we played well, we posted way too many holes with scores of double bogey or higher. To win these 18-hole tournaments, you must avoid the big numbers. I believe our team was as talented as any there from top to bottom, but the few big mistakes we made took us out of contention.”

Washington was led with a trio of 83s posted by Tyler Stoll, Connor Brown and Max Lancaster. Clay Hatton shot 85 to complete the team’s best four scores format. Cam Lancaster played and shot 90.

“In spite of some bad holes, the kids did manage to maintain their focus and did not compound their errors with lack of concentration,” Ricke said. “Shooting in the mid 80s at Cambridge is a decent score any time you play that course.”

The Hatchets are 39-7 for the season and return to Cambridge on Monday for a tri-meet with South Knox and North Posey. The teams travels to Christmas Lake on Tuesday to play Heritage Hills on their home course. They will complete their weekly schedule with an 18-hole tournament Saturday at the Country Club of Old Vincennes in the Rivet Invitational.
