Washington tips off postseason play Wednesday against Southridge

WASHINGTON — As the month of February comes to a close, postseason basketball is right around the corner.

The boys sectional draw for all five classes in Indiana took place Sunday afternoon and now we know the who, when and where in the race for a state championship.

Washington (6-12) tips off in the postseason Wednesday night against host school Southridge in the 3A sectional. The No. 12 Raiders (16-4) are riding a 10-game win streak and already defeated the Hatchets, 61-52 on Feb. 18. Jasper (10-9) will play Mitchell (5-11) in the only first round game Tuesday night and Vincennes Lincoln (14-7) will play Heritage Hills (14-5) in the first game Wednesday night.

In Class A, the No. 1 Barr-Reeve Vikings (18-1) — the defending sectional champions — open play Tuesday night against host school North Daviess. The Vikings have won nine games in a row and are the only team in Sectional 63 with a winning record, while the Cougars (9-10) have had an up and down season after the graduation of dynamic guard Nick Crays.

The rival schools played once this year in the Buggy Bowl game at Kavanaugh Kourt in Montgomery, a 68-53 Barr-Reeve victory. Shoals (1-15) received a bye and will face the winner of Barr-Reeve/North Daviess in Friday's semifinals.

In the second matchup Tuesday night at the Cougar Den, Vincennes Rivet (8-12) plays Loogootee (6-12) in a rematch from last year's sectional at Jack Butcher Arena — of course, the Lions were the defending state champions and not coming off a disappointing season like they are this year. The two teams were scheduled to play Feb. 15 at Rivet, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The winner of Rivet/Loogootee will meet Washington Catholic (4-13) in Friday's semifinals.
