Hatton, WHS finish third

Washington Times Herald

SANTA CLAUS — Clay Hatton shot 79 to lead Washington to a third-place finish in the Big 8 golf match at Christmas Lake Golf Club Saturday.

Hatton’s round placed him in a tie for fifth and earned All-Big 8 honors for the Washington sophomore.

The seven members of the all-conference team include the top four scores from Saturday’s match, along with three members voted by coaches for their season’s results as well as the conference finish.

“I am extremely happy for Clay,” Washington coach Bill Ricke said. “He is a kid who wants to be a very good player and works hard at improving every day. He had developed a flaw in his swing, and the fault was addressed and he worked diligently on correcting it.”

The Hatchets finished with a team score of 328, which placed them behind Jasper (304) and Vincennes Lincoln (318).

Hatton’s 79 was followed by Devan Rude (82), Tyler Stoll (83) Cam Lancaster

(84) and Connor Brown (93).

“Devan had a season tournament best round of 82,” Ricke said. “He has improved his short game and his scores are dropping radically. He had a very good round of golf. Tyler was pounding the ball off the tee and put himself into many good scoring opportunities. He shot a 39 on the back side, including an eagle on the par five 15th. Cam was right there with the rest of the guys with an 84. Cam played well.”

Will Seger of Jasper was medalist with 71. He was followed by Austin Leonard of Vincennes Lincoln (75), Cam Weyer of Jasper (76), Dru Hein of Jasper (78) and rounds of 79 from Hatton, Kyle Washburn of Boonville, Reid Lorey of Jasper, and Mitchell Jackson of Mount Vernon.

Princeton (352), Mount Vernon (356) and Boonville (376) completed the field.

Seger, Leonard, Weyer, Hein, Jackson, Washburn and Hatton were all named all-conference.
