---- — MONTGOMERY- The Barr-Reeve Lady Viking volleyball team opened the 2013 season with a victory over the visiting Sullivan Golden Arrows in three quick sets on Thursday night in Montgomery.
The Vikings made quick work on Sullivan in the opening stanza behind the hitting of junior Tiara Kenney. Kenney recorded five kills in the opening set as the Vikings quickly opened a sizable advantage on the way to a 25-12 victory.
Any hope Sullivan had of a second set comeback was short lived. Behind the pin-point serving of senior Hania Sisco, Barr-Reeve quickly opened a 10-0 lead and would never be threatened. During the second set, senior setter Jenna Knepp connected with several hitters, including senior Tracy Graber on the way to a 25-6 win.
Barr-Reeve erased any remaining doubts of a contest from the opening point of the third set. Junior Molly Wallace used an accurate jump serve to stake the Vikings to a 10-2 that they would never relinquish. Freshman Macin Graber also showed off her serving prowess as the Vikings extended the lead to 16-3, and eventually settled for a 25-5 victory.
Jenna Knepp led the Viking attack with 27 set assists, Tiara Kenney finished with 12 kills, and Hannah Bullock led the Barr-Reeve defense with 19 digs from the Libero position.
Lady Viking coach Amber DeCoursey was pleased with the effort of her squad in the opening contest of the season.
“I thought we were ready to play, and competed well from the start. We are going to be a work in progress for a few weeks, but I’m definitely happy with how we started tonight. I feel like we are going to have to have a balanced attack to compete with the really talented teams on our schedule, and I thought we had that balance tonight.”
The Barr-Reeve junior varsity squad also opened with a 25-14, 25-19 victory. Both Lady Viking teams return to action on Friday night against Bloomfield at Kavanaugh Kourt in Montgomery.
