Lady Cougars stay undefeated on the road

CLAY CITY — North Daviess is undefeated in girls basketball away from the Cougar Den this winter, and the Class A honorable mention Cougars kept it that way with a 41-40 Monday conference road win.

North Daviess (12-3, 4-0 Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference) fell behind early, 7-2, with Meghan Knepp connecting for the Cougars' lone basket in the first quarter.

The second quarter, however was a different story as the Cougars exploded offensively for 17 points.  North Daviess received seven points from Sabra Smith and six from Larynda Keith.  to tie the game at 19 at halftime.

The Cougars appeared to be gaining momentum, but Clay City (5-9, 2-5) bounced back by winning the third quarter, 13-10, for a three-point lead heading into the final quarter. The Eels got baskets from four different players in the quarter, including four points apiece from Alisha Steward and Callie Dayhuff.

The final quarter, just like the second quarter, belonged to the visitors.

North Daviess pulled outscored the Eels 12-8 in the final quarter to give the Cougars a 41-40 victory. Smith scored six of her 19 points total points in the quarter to lead North Daviess to its third victory in a row.

North Daviess coach Ron Knepp said games like these will help the Cougars to be ready for any opponent when they get to February and the postseason.

"This game tonight playing from behind and under the constant pressure to catch up will definitely help in preparation for close sectional games," Ron Knepp said.  "We can draw on this experience and continue to build for the future."
