HUNTINGBURG — Washington will send nine wrestlers to the Bloomington Regional Saturday, including three class champions.

But it was senior Aaron Cissell who set the standard for Washington at last Saturday’s sectional at Southridge.

Cissell won his third class championship and set a new mark in career wins while winning the 170-pound class for the Hatchets.

Cissell decisioned Jasper’s Dillon Wagner, 2-0. After splitting regular season matches, the wrestlers were locked in a 0-0 tie after two periods before Cissell scored in the third and then held the lead for the win.

“One thing I can say about Aaron is that if has a lead he can hang on and come through and finish,” Washington coach John Thompson said.

“I liked how he (Cissell) wrestled today. Three sectional titles is quite an accomplishment.”

Cissell’s third championship ties the Washington mark set by  Brock Williams. He entered the sectional one win shy of the school mark held by Beau Parons, but now is the new career Hatchet leader at 123.

Cissell was the defending champion at 182, but worked his down to the lower weight class for his senior season.

“He had to cut down his weight gradually,” Thompson said.

“He is real disciplined, and after wrestling kids at the higher weights, he’s now a little bit stronger with a bit more conditioning. It paid off.”

Cissell was joined as a class winner by Ryan Koerner at 113 pounds. Koerner pinned Crawford County’s Austin Newton in 1:28, and Edgardo Meza who decisioned Mitchell’s Trevin Grissom, 6-3, at 132.

“That was a really tough wrestler - the number one seed that Ryan  (Koerner) beat,” Thompson said. “Ryan has been that type of wrestler for us all season. He steps up in the big matches.

“Edgardo is a hard worker,” Thompson said. “A lot of time he doesn’t go late into matches because he gets pins, but he showed that he can manage a match. He got a nice win.”

The Hatchets also had three wrestlers make weight class final rounds.

Levi Graber placed second at 120 pounds, dropping a 6-3 decision to Jasper’s Nathan Schitter. Richard Osha lost a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Jasper’s Grant Brescher who scored a point with one second left at 145, and Edrwin Revolorio who lost to Jasper’s Moises Valenciano, 3-2, at 195 pounds.

The top four wrestlers advance to Bloomington, and the Hatchets also had three wrestlers finish either third of fourth.

Isaac Drew decisioned Southridge’s Blaize Meyerholtz, 8-0, at 138 for third. Jake Owens was defeated by Devin Cobb of Mitchell with a pin at 1:43 for third at 160, and Cameron Meade placed fourth at 182 pounds after losing a 4-1 decision to Andrew Roberts of Bedford North Lawrence.

“We would like to think our people in the finals have a really good chance to get through the championship at the regional, but it’s going to be a different creature with us going to Bloomington.” Thompson said. “Bloomington South is the third ranked team in the state and there will be a lot of bigger schools there. It’s going to be tough, but I think we can step up to that challenge.”

Dakota Butler placed fifth at 126 pounds and will serve as the first alternate in the class in case one of the wrestlers who advanced can not compete at Bloomington.

“It was a great day of wrestling for us with six kids in the finals - three who won their weight class. That’s the most we’ve won since we started coming to the Southridge Sectional,” Thompson said. “It was a tough day, but we had quite a few kids place and I’m really happy with it.”
