Washington wins sectional, moves on to regionals Saturday

Members of the Washington High School boys bowling team celebrated a sectional victory Saturday at Laurel Lanes. The team brought home its third consecutive title and advanced regional Saturday at Bloomington’s Classic Lanes. Washington defeated Jasper by 78 pins to claim the title after a roll off was needed to decide the champion.

The top eight individuals and top two teams will begin individual competition at 9 a.m with the team competition scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Saturday.

“We’ve won the sectional the last three years,” said senior Chase Ragens. “It’s always great accomplishment to move onto the regional.”

Zack Scheid, Justice Latham, John Harner, Wes Richardson and Chase Ragens will compete in the team competition while Richardson, Ragens, and Scheid will compete in both the individual and team competition.

In addition to claiming the Blue Chip Conference South sectional, the team earned top honors for their conference and finished the regular season 9-1.

Richardson was named the high game recipient for the conference match and Ragens earned high series and high average conference honors.

The team, coached by Rick Mattingly and Brandon Fitzpatrick, hope to continue their success into the regional. Last year, the team claimed the regional held in Evansville and moved onto semistate.

Washington’s girls team of Cassy Breitweiser, Emily Steelman, Katora Harris and Haley Taylor also competed in sectional play but failed to advance to the regional.
