ELNORA — ELNORA – North Daviess senior tailback Colton Lengacher had an outstanding start to the 2013 season, and Friday night he took his play to another level.

Lengacher ran for 272 yards and four touchdowns to lead North Daviess (4-1) to a 40-15 victory over North Putnam on a rainy night at Cougar Valley.

The North Daviess defense forced a three-and-out on the game’s opening possession and after that it was the Colton Lengacher show. North Daviess scored on its first possession of the game when Lengacher scored the first touchdown of the night on a 10-yard run just three minutes into play.

North Putnam answered with a touchdown drive which was keyed by a North Daviess 15-yard late hit penalty on a third-and-11 from its own 40-yard-line. Tyler Land ran for 18 yards on a fourth-and-4 to put the ball on the North Daviess two-yard-line. North Putnam quarterback Gabe McFadden did the rest on a quarterback sneak to give the Cougars its only score of the game and an early 7-6 lead.  The first quarter ended with North Putnam leading by one point, but the second quarter was an entirely different story.

North Daviess scored touchdowns on its next three possessions on Lengacher runs and took a 28-7 lead at halftime. In the second quarter, Lengacher ran the ball 10 times for 195 yards and touchdown runs of 27, 65 and 10. Lengacher reached 263 yards on just 20 carries to add to his outstanding season. Entering Friday's contest the senior tailback had amassed 1,106 yards and 13 touchdowns on 105 carries. North Daviess quarterback Brady Helms didn’t even have to attempt a pass in the first half.

In the second half senior Logan Turpin took over where Lengacher left off in the first half. Turpin added touchdown runs of 47 and 53 yards to give North Daviess a 40-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. The North Daviess defense forced two turnovers in the first half, and turned the North Putnam offense back when it forced a turnover on downs in the red zone late in the third quarter.

North Daviess will travel to undefeated Linton (5-0) Friday in search of its first win over the Miners since the 2010 season. Linton has won three straight over North Daviess including the past two in the regular season. The Cougars fell to the Miners 35-12 at Cougar Valley in the regular season and 48-6 at Linton in the sectional.
