From Staff Reports
The North Daviess Cougars fell behind early and they just couldn't gain their footing.
Perry Central (9-2) defeated North Daviess (8-3) 28-12 in the Class A sectional semifinal, pushing the Cougars sectional championship drought to 20 years.
Both teams started with a three-and-out, and on the second North Daviess punt, Perry Central's Dacota Schaad ran it back 44 yards to the North Daviess 19-yard line.On the next play, sophomore quarterback Lane Lynch hit Dillon Hubert for a 19-yard touchdown to put the Commodores up 7-0. After another North Daviess punt, Perry Central drove the ball into the Cougar red zone, but Lynch's pass on fourth-and-9 was short of the first down marker and North Daviess took over at its own 10.
On its fourth offensive possession, North Daviess finally got back on track. After two Colton Lengacher runs for nine yards and Logan Turpin's six yard dash gave North Daviess its only first down of the opening quarter. On the first play of the second quarter, Lengacher ran through the Perry Central defense for a 75-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 7-6. The momentum for the Cougars was short-lived. Senior Austin Leclere took the first Commodores' offensive snap for a 69-yard touchdown to give Perry Central a 14-6 lead.
North Daviess took the next drive into Perry Central territory, but a holding call negated what would have been a first down run by Lengacher at the Commodores' 30. North Daviess faced a third-and-9, but couldn't convert the first down on two straight plays and turned the ball over on downs. The North Daviess defense forced a Perry Central punt and the Cougars had the ball with less than four minutes to play with a chance to tie the game going into halftime. Turpin ran two times for 11 yards and quarterback Sam Chapin found Dakota Adams on a three-yard pass play. On the next play, Lengacher ran for 37 yards down to the Perry Central 19.
Three plays later on a third-and-9 from the North Daviess 18-yard line, Chapin was intercepted by Schaad at the 5-yard line with 25 seconds left in the half.
In the second half, the Cougar defense had no answer for the Perry Central rushing and air attack. The Commodores used a 7-minute drive to push the lead to 21-12 on a Lynch 20-yard touchdown to Leclere. The Cougars bounced back with a 12-yard Lengacher rushing touchdown on a drive that saw him go over 200 yards rushing for the night.
Perry Central used another long drive to put the game away on a Lynch 9-yard touchdown to Schaad to give the Commodores a 28-12 lead with 7:42 to play in regulation. The game was the last for Lengacher, who is the North Daviess all-time career and single season rushing leader.
Perry Central will host Linton (11-0), who defeated Tecumseh 28-24 Friday night.
