Lengacher leads ND to OT victory

ELNORA — Colton Lengacher would not be denied.

After leaving the game with a lower leg injury late in the fourth quarter, North Daviess senior tailback Colton Lengacher returned to score two overtime touchdowns and the winning two-point conversion to give the Cougars (6-2) a 35-33 win over North Knox (4-4). Lengacher ran for 301 yards and three touchdowns in a gutty performance Friday night at Cougar Valley.

In overtime, Lengacher put the Cougars up 27-21 with a 10-yard run, then tied the game with a 1-yard touchdown on fourth down. He pushed through the North Knox offensive line to convert the two-point conversion and give the Cougars the two-point victory.

North Daviess couldn’t get out of first gear thanks to sloppy play during the first 24 minutes.

North Daviess committed 11 first half penalties and 15 for the game, but its defense stood strong. North Knox turned the ball over on downs twice inside North Daviess territory.

Lengacher gave the Cougars the game’s first lead on a 23-yard rushing touchdown on the first play of the second quarter to give North Daviess a 7-0 lead.

Jordan Meurer’s 1-yard quarterback sneak tied the game at seven with 3:13 to play in the first half.

North Knox took the ball to start the second half, and took the ball all the way down for the go-ahead touchdown on a 61-yard drive, which was capped by a Meurer 5-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 14-7. Doug Bays answered immediately with an 82-yard kick return touchdown to bring the Cougar within a point at 14-13 with 4:45 to play in the third quarter.

North Knox countered with another 61-yard drive, which was capped by a Meurer 20-yard touchdown run to give the Warriors a 21-13 lead.

On the next drive, North Daviess thought it had a 33-yard Lengacher touchdown, but a holding call nullified the score and the Cougars later turned the ball over on downs.
