James ‘Bill’ Combess

LOOGOOTEE — James William “Bill” Combess, 59, died at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at his residence.

Born May 7, 1946, in Loogootee, he was the son of William Andrew “Andy” and Dorothy (Carrico) Combess.

A 1964 graduate of St. John High School, he was a heavy equipment operator for 25 years with the operating engineers.

He spent 10 years in the Indiana National Guard and was a member of the Loogootee American Legion and the Crane V.F.W.

He is survived by two daughters, Talicia Todd of Carmel, and Tiffany Marshburn of Apex, N.C.; his mother, Dorothy Combess of Loogootee; one brother, Scott Combess of Loogootee; four sisters, Carolyn Jane Norris and Mary Muessig, both of Loogootee, Kathy Wittmer of Plainville and Amy Shassere of Cincinnati, Ohio; and four grandchildren, Corey Padgett, Caroline Todd, Kyle Marshburn and Cameron Todd.

His wife, Janet K. (Bateman) Combess, whom he married Feb. 21, 1970, died Feb. 18, 2005. His father, Andy Combess, died in 1984 and one brother, Denny Combess, died in 2003.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John Catholic Church in Loogootee.

Burial will be in Goodwill Cemetery, with military services conducted by the American Legion and the V.F.W.

Visitation is from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Brocksmith Funeral Home, Loogootee, with a rosary service at 7 p.m.
